What if you could buy an electric motorcycle that costs less than a lakh rupees and still gives you everything you need for daily travel? This question is now getting a real answer from a Bengaluru-based company called Oben Electric, according to information from DriveSpark.

Understanding Oben Electric’s Bold Mission

Madhumita Agrawal leads Oben Electric as its CEO and Founder, and she has a clear vision for India’s motorcycle future. Her company, which started in August 2020, represents something quite remarkable in India’s growing electric vehicle industry. The team brings together more than 25 years of experience working with electric vehicle technology, which means they understand the challenges that Indian riders face every day.

What makes this company particularly interesting is their approach to innovation. They hold more than 25 patents in electric motorcycle technology, showing that they are not just assembling parts from other companies but actually creating new solutions. Their philosophy of “Design in India for the World” means they are building motorcycles specifically for Indian conditions first, then expanding globally.

Breaking Down the O100 Platform Revolution

The O100 platform represents a completely new approach to making electric motorcycles affordable for regular people. Think of a platform like the foundation of a house – once you build a good foundation, you can create many different types of houses on top of it. Similarly, this O100 platform allows Oben to create multiple motorcycle variants with different battery sizes and features, all sharing the same basic structure.

This platform specifically targets the 100cc motorcycle market, which is absolutely crucial in India. Most Indian families rely on 100cc petrol motorcycles for daily commuting because they offer the perfect balance of affordability, fuel efficiency, and practical performance. By creating an electric alternative to this popular segment, Oben is addressing the needs of millions of Indian commuters.

Technical Innovation Made Simple

The heart of any electric motorcycle is its battery technology, and Oben has chosen something called Lithium Ferro Phosphate, or LFP batteries. These batteries are significantly safer than regular lithium-ion batteries because they can handle much higher temperatures without becoming dangerous.

  • Safety advantage: LFP batteries can withstand temperatures that are 50% higher than traditional batteries, making them perfect for India’s hot climate conditions.
  • Environmental benefits: These batteries contain no cobalt or nickel, making them much more environmentally friendly and easier to recycle when they reach the end of their life.
  • Practical performance: The batteries provide 80 to 100 kilometers of range on a single charge, which covers most people’s daily commuting needs, and they are swappable for faster refueling.
  • Motor efficiency: The BLDC hub motor delivers top speeds of 70 to 80 kilometers per hour, which is perfectly suitable for both city roads and highway travel.

Market Strategy and Future Impact

Oben Electric plans to launch motorcycles based on the O100 platform in the second half of 2025, with pricing models designed to stay under Rs 1 lakh. This pricing strategy is absolutely critical because it makes electric motorcycles accessible to the same people who currently buy 100cc petrol bikes.

The company aims to establish over 100 showrooms by the end of this year, which shows their serious commitment to reaching both urban and rural markets across India. This expansion strategy suggests that electric motorcycles are moving from being luxury items to practical transportation solutions for everyday Indians, potentially transforming how millions of people think about their daily commute.
