Lamborghini Takes Slow Road to Electric Cars: “Best Not First” Approach
Luxury car maker Lamborghini is not rushing to make fully electric cars, choosing instead to take a careful step-by-step path toward an electric future. According to AutoCar, the Italian supercar company plans to release its first fully electric vehicle only at the end of this decade, focusing on hybrid models for now. “The idea was never to be the first ones, but to be the best one when it comes to EVs,” said Francesco Scardaoni, Asia Pacific Region Director of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., during a launch event in Delhi, India.
The company is currently selling several cars that combine petrol engines with electric motors – what car experts call hybrid technology. “We believe hybrids are an important step towards electrification and right now our customers want these hybrids,” Scardaoni added. This careful approach shows how Lamborghini is listening to what buyers want rather than rushing ahead with technology changes.
Why Lamborghini Loves Hybrid Cars First
Hybrid cars use both petrol engines and electric motors to move the car. For super-expensive sports cars like Lamborghini, this mix offers several big advantages:
- More Power: Adding electric motors to traditional engines gives cars extra strength for faster acceleration
- Better Handling: Electric motors on the front wheels help the car turn more precisely (what engineers call “torque vectoring”)
- Lower Pollution: These cars produce fewer harmful gases than regular petrol-only cars
- Happy Customers: Lamborghini says buyers currently prefer these hybrids over fully electric options
Lamborghini’s Current Hybrid Car Family
Lamborghini has already launched several hybrid models that are proving very popular with wealthy car buyers. In fact, some models are so popular that if you ordered one today, you might wait years to get it!
Car Name | Type | Key Information |
---|---|---|
Revuelto | Hybrid Supercar | Already sold out for over two years |
Urus SE | Plug-in Hybrid SUV | Launched in India (August 2024), deliveries starting 2025 |
Temerario | V8 Hybrid Sports Car | Launched in India (April 2025), replaces the Huracan model |
A plug-in hybrid is a special type of hybrid car that can be charged from an electrical outlet, just like your mobile phone. This gives it more electric-only driving range than regular hybrids.
Record-Breaking Sales Show Demand is Strong
Lamborghini is selling more cars than ever before, showing that their approach is working well with luxury car buyers. According to Lamborghini, the company delivered a record 10,687 cars worldwide in 2024.
Region | 2024 Deliveries | Change from 2023 |
---|---|---|
Global | 10,687 cars | New record high |
Asia-Pacific | 2,748 cars | 3% increase |
India | 113 cars | 10% increase |
Hagerty reports that order books for Lamborghini’s hybrid models are already full until 2026 and 2027, which means future sales look bright. This shows many rich car buyers are excited about these half-electric, half-petrol supercars.
How Other Luxury Brands Are Handling Electric Cars
Different luxury car makers are taking various paths toward electric cars, with each brand choosing its own speed and approach. According to CarsGuide, Lamborghini’s plan differs from some competitors:
- Ferrari: Plans to release its first fully electric car in October 2025, with production starting early 2026, according to sustainability-times
- Ferrari’s Goal: Wants 40% of its cars to be electric by 2030, while still making hybrids and petrol cars
- McLaren: Focusing heavily on hybrid technology like Lamborghini, moving slowly toward full electric
- Porsche: Moving more quickly toward all-electric models than most luxury sports car makers

Lamborghini’s First Electric Car: Coming Later This Decade
When Lamborghini finally releases its first fully electric car around 2028 or 2029, it will be a different type of vehicle than their current two-seat sports cars. According to CarsGuide, it will be what car experts call a “2+2 GT model” – meaning it will have two full seats in front and two smaller seats in back, designed for longer, comfortable drives rather than just pure speed.
The car is expected to be based on the Lanzador concept, which Lamborghini has already shown at car shows. This approach gives the company time to perfect the technology while continuing to sell their popular hybrid models.
As electric car technology keeps getting better, you might wonder if Lamborghini’s slow approach is smart or too cautious. But with orders for their current models stretching years into the future, it seems many luxury car buyers agree with their “best not first” philosophy.
